Arlo security system can now alert customers to gunfire, scream, and bark dogs

Screaming. Gunshots. Broken glass. Homeowners want to not hear any of these messages, but now new AI features in the Arlo Home Security subscription service can notify customers of such sounds via email and push notifications. On Thursday, the company announced the next-generation security software, Arlo Secure 6, which includes alerts for these and other sounds.

Arlo Secure 6 also offers a set of other features, including AI-generated subtitles to describe events, using keywords or descriptions, and video search capabilities for Flame detection.

Secure 6 camera reminds subscribers when they find someone screaming, dogs barking, intruders smashing glass or shooting guns. New enhancements build on previously introduced features including personnel and vehicle identification and custom detection.

“When your dog barks, you’ll be notified so you can watch live videos to see if your dog is barking at a stranger or a cat,” Arlo said in a press release.

CNET employees say this is a novel concept.

“In the past, I’ve tested advanced ARLO AI, like the ability to train its visual AI on certain objects,” said Tyler Lacoma, CNET Home Security Editor. “But it’s one of the only services I’ve ever seen that can recognize flames or send custom alerts about gunfire and screams. As home security AI grows, these features become higher and higher, these features become more common, and Arlo is early in gaming.”

A growing industry

According to a new report from Grand View Research, Arlo’s capabilities improve its competitiveness in the home security system market, and the company will continue to grow for at least the next few years. The report expects annual global growth rate to exceed 15% in the $33.94 billion market size in 2024.

Grand View said a wide variety of factors, including society and technology, are driving growth: an increasing focus on security and assurance, user convenience for remote monitoring and control, and the continued and seemingly unlimited advancement of AI technology.

The AI camera market is also booming, partly due to the growing demand for next-generation home security systems. According to the latest report from Transparent Market Research, the market will grow to about $35.5 billion by the end of 2034, with an annual growth rate of 14%.

Thanks to rapid and continuous improvements in image recognition, facial recognition, object detection and behavioral analysis, AI cameras have also become critical in the security and surveillance, automotive, retail, healthcare and smart home industries.
