Art Idol Hits Amy Sherald’s American Sublime

Last Tuesday and Wednesday, a well-established art world elite stormed into Whitney to toast “Amy Shelder: America’s Sublime,” an event that will open in New York on April 9, and as observers noted, was her most comprehensive work to date when we covered SFMOMA’s exhibition at SFMOMA. There is no argument that Sherald carved a hell for himself in contemporary American realism and image. The exhibition will bring together fifty paintings spanning 2007 to the present, including early works almost never publicly, and create a new painting for the exhibition along with iconic portraits of her first lady Michelle Obama and Breneonna Taylor.

But let’s talk about the real wonder: the guest list. Revelers are there to enjoy Sherald’s success, converging in museums from the world of art, media, fashion and philanthropy. On Tuesday, DJ set up the mood as the invitation gathered on the fifth floor to admire the works of “America Sublime” and then headed to the museum’s lobby for a sit-down repast, which made everything even more magical. The celebration continued Wednesday at the opening party, which also began with a peek at the exhibition – this time “Marina Zurkow: Separating the World,” “Mary Heilmann: Long-term” and “Collect Landscape: Louise Nevelson:”, the show’s special bonus preview next week. Not surprisingly, there were a lot of the same faces in the second night crowd (the only benefit of doing it twice in a week by Whitney), but there were also lots of novelty celebrities.
