Major power outage in Spain, Portugal may take 6-10 hours to fix

Spanish newspaper El País reported that the massive power outage that caused chaos on Monday in the Iberian Peninsula will require another six to 10 hours of repairs.

The company Red Eléctrica said from social media posts at 3:32 PM GMT (1332) from social media posts that power has been restored to substations in several areas of the northern, southern and western peninsula.

“We will continue to use all available resources to restore electricity across the territory as soon as possible,” the Post said. The key goal at the moment is to power the power generation units.

Railway company Renfe said the entire Spanish National Electricity Grid failed at 1030 pm GMT at 12:30 pm, causing the train to stop.

The reason for the power outage has not been announced yet.

According to El País, the Incibe Cybersecurity Administration is investigating the incident, but has not ruled out the cyber attack.

Journalists from Madrid and Barcelona DPA confirmed power outages in both cities, and Madrid’s Open Tennis Championships were also suspended.

As traffic lights are closed and stuck, infrastructure, telephone networks and traffic are all affected.

The Spanish Ministry of Health said the hospital was not seriously hit due to backup of backup generators.

Broadcasting firm RTP reported that in neighboring Portugal, there were power outages in several areas.

Operator Feda said on X that the Canaries and Balearic Islands in Spain were not affected, while the power outage in neighboring Andorra lasted only a few seconds.

Before the restoration of electricity, a part of the Basque region of France was also briefly affected.

The European Commission said it is in contact with Spanish and Portuguese authorities.

A spokeswoman said in Brussels: “The committee is in contact with the Spanish and Portuguese national authorities … to understand the root causes and impact of the situation.”

“There are protocols that restore the functionality of the system,” she added.
