Recently, Paramount released a new promotional poster. starfleet academythis Star Trek: Discovery The spin-off series will begin airing on January 15th. Typically, a promo like this is meant to appeal to old fans while giving potential new fans a better idea of what the series is all about.
Unfortunately, starfleet academy The promotional poster was a failure on every level, and it was sure to piss off a large portion of the existing fans while also generally confusing casual viewers who had no idea what to expect from the show.
Star Trek posters go places they’ve never been

Like many people, I stumbled upon starfleet academy Promotional posters in my social media feeds. Scrolling from top to bottom, my first thought was, “Well, the polys on this show look like they’re really having fun together.” As I kept scrolling and saw the show’s title, I asked (more like yelled, if I’m honest) the obvious question: Is this it? real Should it be a Star Trek show?
Typically, Star Trek promotional posters feature characters from a bizarre science fiction universe, often with a starship in the background. In addition to advertising a show or movie, such posters serve a very logical purpose: they reassure existing fans that the new project will feel like classic Trek. Look at the promotional poster strange new worldFor example, you know immediately that this is going to be a show about serious explorers who boldly go where no one has gone before, like Star Trek: The Original Series.
Worst space suit since Wesley Crusher

this starfleet academy However, the poster has none of this. Most of the characters don’t seem to be wearing uniforms. At least, not what they were wearing in the trailer for the series released a month ago. Maybe they’ll have multiple uniforms (oops, Discover Change uniforms no less than three times in five seasons). However, this poster does make it seem like these cadets are just hanging out in the ugliest spacesuits since Wesley Crusher first donned that iridescent gray shirt.
Again, a rather odd choice for hanging out on the grass. this starfleet academy Showrunners promised the show would alternate between adventures at the eponymous academy and adventures in space on a training ship, but this image doesn’t feature a starship or anything overtly symbolic of outer space. It also doesn’t really feature the Academy itself, so it’s almost impossible for newcomers to the franchise to understand what this upcoming TV show is about on any level.
90210 Space

In fact, the only thing the poster really conveys is that the show is filled with young people who seem very friendly to each other. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with being nice, and most of us will watch shows that emphasize joy rather than brutal darkness. Picard Good morning Discover. But without any real sci-fi trappings, the poster makes it look like starfleet academy As its haters say: 90210 in space.
In fact, if you look at the poster without any text, the only thing that identifies it as a Star Trek show is the Klingon character in the upper left corner. A newcomer to the series who doesn’t recognize this iconic alien race might really have no way of knowing that this show is connected to one of the longest-running series in television history. Making the posters as un-Star Trek-like as possible might attract science fiction-hating viewers, but it could also drive away fans who have kept the series alive for decades.
At the risk of sounding dramatic, this starfleet academy The poster perfectly sums up everything wrong with modern Star Trek: Paramount is content to ignore its traditional audience in favor of appealing to younger people who may form the (ahem) next generation of fans of the franchise. Historically, this hasn’t worked out (just ask the producers of kid-friendly shows that have been canceled prematurely) child prodigy), and the network simply cannot afford to further drive away its biggest fans in pursuit of new viewers who won’t actually tune in. should starfleet academy Despite its proven unpopularity, Star Trek could boldly go where the series has never gone before: complete and utter pop culture oblivion.
