“Hola, Ajedrez” means “Hello, chess” in Spanish. You are always able to learn Spanish on Duolingo. And you will be able to learn and practice chess on the language learning application. Duolingo announced on April 22 that Beta testers can now practice hundreds of years of board games on Duolingo, and others will be able to learn the game on the app in a few months.
Chess will be the first new Duolingo course since the app began offering math and music classes in 2023. Duolingo hopes this brings classic board games to more people with experience levels.

Duolingo Chess Courses are designed to be beginner-friendly
I talked to Duolingo representative about the upcoming course. He said the company hopes to continue to expand what people can learn through the app, and chess was an early competitor.
“Chess is one of the things that people of any age can learn…but then it will take 10,000 hours of theory to really master. “We think this is a perfect fit for the Duolingo medium. ”
When I asked why people use Duolingo on other chess learning websites and tools, Borg said a lot of other chess content is targeted at power users rather than new immigrants. “We did see a great opportunity to try to cater to more beginners, medium (players), and try to increase access to the game,” he said.
Chess courses are slightly different from others you might find on Duolingo, such as Spanish and math, but with similar progress systems. Judging by what Duolingo showed me, these courses do start with Square One, or A1 on the board.

Chess courses feel similar to other Duolingo courses
When you start, Duolingo asks how much you already know about chess, just like other courses on the app. Duolingo will then adjust the course to your answer. If you say you are brand new to chess and don’t know about the game, the early lessons will focus on how to move before each piece before continuing to capture the other pieces and check out the king. Other courses are similar to mini-spelling, and you may be asked to capture different works with a single part (such as a knight or rok) in four moves or less.
You can access tips for each class, but if you find some issues, your opponent will react to indicate that you have opened a capture piece, such as in a real game. And if you encounter something incorrect, Duolingo will show you how to do it. “If you get it wrong multiple times, we’ll end up showing you an arrow showing you where the relocation is.”
If you are subscribed to Duolingo Max and make a mistake in your language class, the app can explain the error and the correct solution with a feature called “Explanation My Answer”. However, this feature will be temporarily unavailable. It is not always easy to explain why it is right and wrong in chess, because there are many different moves.
Chess progresses similar to other Duolingo courses, so it should be familiar to those who have used the app before.
“We want to get better at Fuller’s explanation,” Siegel said. “We want to use some mixed approach of AI and model training to better explain why a move is wrong.” Since chess has a lot of moves, it is possible to make moves that might be the right but not the best choice. In this case, Duolingo will display a banner that lets you know that the move is not wrong, but not necessarily the best move.
Duolingo also said that each section represents the scope of the ELO rating system, which is a method of calculating skills of chess participants. As you progress, your courses will become more difficult and challenging. This is similar to the CEFR language proficiency level attached to different language parts in the application.
You will also have the opportunity to play a “mini game” or full-scale match against Duolingo’s chess coach Oscar. These games will also be difficult to challenge you, so you won’t face grandmother-level chess players after the first week of playing the game. But that doesn’t mean you can relax and slip. If you make a mistake like letting the Queen open up to capture, the Oscars will take advantage of the advantages that will make you scramble to recover.
It’s a great exercise in the face of the Oscars, but when these chess classes are launched you won’t be able to fight against other players. But Duolingo says playing against other people is what they are looking for, so you can play with the app in the future with friends and friends. “One of the main reasons we do this is that we think we can attract a generation of people to be interested in chess,” Borg said.
Duolingo’s new chess course is now available in the beta version and will be launched in English starting in May. Duolingo said it will bring these courses to Android devices and more languages in the coming months.
