BYD leads China’s electric vehicle market in weekly registration, NIO soars 94%

China registered 351,000 passenger cars in the week ending April 13, up 3.9% from last week, according to Carnewschina. Of these, 186,000 are new energy vehicles, increasing the penetration rate of electric vehicles to 53%, an increase of 2.9 percentage points.

BYD registered 53,400 cars in one week, an increase of 18.4% from 45,100 the previous week. In the first two weeks of April, BYD registered 98,500 cars in China. The company sold 4.3 million cars in 2024, with a target of about 5.5 million this year. Its premium brand Denza received 3,000 cars, a 15.4% increase from last week.

Tesla (TSLA, Financials) reported 5,400 vehicle registrations this week, up 50% from 3,600 people. In March, Tesla shipped 78,828 cars, including domestic sales and exports, down 11.5% from the same period last year, but the total in February more than doubled.

Li Auto (Li, Financials) then conducted 7,200 registrations, up 16.1% from 6,200 people. Registrations reached 13,400 units from April to date. The company sold more than half a million vehicles in 2024, and the company delayed the launch of its next all-electric model after receiving poor reception from the Li Mega Minivan. It aims to sell 700,000 vehicles in 2025.

XPENG (XPEV, Financials) holds 6,700 vehicles, down 10.7% from the previous week. The company delivered 33,205 vehicles in March and delivered more than 30,000 months in a row with the help of its MONA M03 sedan. The model reached 100,000 cumulative units in eight months.

Xiaomi recorded 6,300 registrations, a 23.5% increase from the previous week. It delivered 11,400 units in the first half of April and increased its 2025 target from 300,000 to 350,000 units. The company sold 135,000 units in 2024.

LeapMotor reported 6,400 registrations, an increase of 18.5%. The brand has recorded 11,800 units to date.

Deepal recorded 4,340 registrations, an increase of 5.9%. In the first two weeks of April, it recorded 8,440 registrations.

Nio (Nio, Financials) has huge weekly gains, with 3500 registered vehicles, up 94.4% from 1,800 last week. The company has added incentives, including a five-year free battery swap. Nio Group, including ONVO and Firefly, registered 4,200 units, a 68% increase from the previous week. Onvo recorded 730 units. Firefly is expected to launch its first model on April 19. Nio will target 440,000 delivery in 2024, half of which comes from Onvo.

Aito registered 3,200 cars, down 33.3% from last week. Zeekr reported 2300 registrations, down 14.8%. AVATR recorded 1,500 units, up 15.4%.
