Bulgarian government survives a vote of distrust held by a trustless party

Sofia, Bulgaria (AP) – The Bulgarian government survived Thursday in a unconfidence parliamentary vote, a unconfidence vote that supports Russian parties in the so-called failures in the state’s foreign policy.

The motion of the Wazrazdan Party, supported by two small nationalist groups, criticized the government’s pro-Western stance, support for Ukraine and ongoing sanctions on Moscow.

The move was defeated in a 240-seat parliament vote of 150-54 against the motion. The government’s coalition cabinet is led by the center-right party.

Prior to the vote, analysts predicted the result, citing the majority support Bulgaria’s pro-European orientation. The country has been a member of the EU since 2007.

“For Vazrazhdane, voting is a tool to expand Russian narrative in a hybrid war against Bulgaria – the Moscow war works with disinformation and subversive political strategies,” said political analyst Ilian Vassilev.

Gerb condemned the motion of distrust as an attempt to consolidate its European integration by making Bulgaria’s desire to adopt the euro currency in early 2026.

Speaking in the media after the vote, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said it “confirmed Bulgaria’s European perspective and democratic development, which is what most Bulgarian people want.”
