Bunker Hill cancels study abroad amid changes in federal policy

Bunker Hill Community College is canceling its summer study abroad program in response to the Trump administration’s immigration policy, WBUR reported.

“Our priority in our learning experience abroad is the safety of students and staff,” a statement from the Community College to WBUR. “As changes in national immigration policies and enforcement that have emerged over the past few weeks, including the prospect of re-limiting travel restrictions, the college will redirect this year’s exploration and learning to a U.S.-based website.”

Community College plans to send about 60 students to Costa Rica, Ghana, Japan, Kenya and Panama for a two-week educational program between May and July. The Trump administration is considering a decision to cancel travel after news reports say it is considering a travel ban on dozens of countries.

Biology professor Scott Benjamin, who has led the trip to Costa Rica since 2002, told WBUR that university leaders care about international students planning to make those trips. International students account for 7% of the university’s student population.

“Schools are very worried about the possible distance, but we still have the possibility of leaving and returning, and students cannot return to the country,” Benjamin told the news outlet.
