Community vigils in California continued through the weekend in honor of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was killed by a rifle fire at a rifle rifle.
At NOE Valley Park in San Francisco, about 80 people attended the Saturday afternoon memorial hosted by the county Republican Party. Activities for the San Francisco Standard Report include prayers, eulogies and placards that facilitate dialogue. Once, the police looked at it from a distance.
In Ventura County, the local Republican committee plans to hold a “Lights in the Dark” vigil in Moorpark on Monday night. The event is scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm and is held at Walnut Grove in Tierra Rejada Farms.
Kirk, founder of the turning point of the conservative youth organization, was shot dead while speaking at the University of Utah.
The 31-year-old is popular among conservative groups on university campuses, but has been controversial due to his frequent intentional provocative attacks on diversity programs and ethnic, racial and sexual minorities.
He called the Civil Rights Act a mistake, and recently tweeted: “Islam is incompatible with Western civilization.”
After his death, social media discourse in certain departments became so divided that some Utah officials called on people to log out and “go out and do good things in your community.”
Despite the online environment, politicians and advocacy groups in the political field condemned the killings.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said he “admired [Kirk’s] passion and commitment to debate” and called his murder “pathological and reprehensible.”
A leading Muslim civil rights group said: “The values that led us to oppose many of Mr Kirk’s positions are the same values that make us condemn his murder and reiterate that political violence is not the answer to the most hateful remarks.”
Among vigils held or arranged locally are vigils by Van Nuys, Beverly Hills, Rancho Palos Verdes and Huntington Beach. In addition, the Los Angeles Republican Party held an online event on Sunday, “violent dignity.” It is hosted by the Political Depolarization Nonprofit Angel of Courage.
In Moorpark, organizers hope hundreds of people will attend the Monday vigil at Walnut Grove at Tierra Rejada Farms.
Richard Lucas III, chairman of the Ventura County Republican Party, who is holding the event, said Kirk clearly told the truth when he included the Second Amendment and the beginning of his life, making himself “nearly cordial to many people” in the process.
He said he hoped the vigil would include prayer, commitment to allegiance and many tears.
“Pray for peace, pray for love,” Lucas said. “We know that political parties don’t always see the eyes, but the outcome of any violence is clearly unacceptable, especially political violence.”
