California State University, Long Beach student stabbed to death. Roommate charged with murder
A 22-year-old California State University, Long Beach student was stabbed to death by his roommate in a swift and brutal attack and police are investigating the motive, authorities said.
Alejandro Iniestra, 34, attacked Spencer Timms and their other roommate with a knife early Saturday morning, according to the Long Beach Police Department. Police arrived at their home in the 1300 block of Temple Avenue at 10:38 a.m. and found two men severely bleeding.
Timms died at the scene and the other victim, who police have not yet identified, was taken to hospital and stables.
Timms’ cause of death was determined to be multiple stab wounds to the chest, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner said.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of student Spencer Timms,” university spokesman Jeffrey Cook said in a statement. “We have been in contact with Spencer’s family and have been reaching out and supporting his Beach classmates and faculty.”
According to Timms’ LinkedIn information, Timms transferred from Saddleback College to California State University, Long Beach in January 2024 and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in industrial design.
Iniestra was arrested at the scene of the attack and is being held in lieu of $2 million bail, police said. The motive for the stabbing remains under investigation.
He is charged with Timms’ murder, attempted murder of their other roommate and a special charge of use of a deadly weapon in both charges, according to court records. He is scheduled to go on trial on October 21 and could face life in prison if found guilty.
