Now everyone can view it Avengers: Doomsday In a trailer featuring the X-Men, something completely incredible is happening: Even the most jaded fans are getting excited about upcoming Marvel projects. While it’s cool to see Professor But what most excited fans don’t know is this: This awesome moment is very directly adapted from a similarly delightful scene in the canceled X-Men comics created by geek icon Joss Whedon.
If you haven’t seen it yet Avengers: Doomsday The trailer features the X-Men, so here’s a quick recap: Most of the trailer shows a seemingly abandoned Xavier mansion, and the only two people we see inside are an elderly Professor X and Magneto playing chess. At first, Magneto seemed to be the main character… not only was it shocking to see him with a big gray beard, but he provided some ominous narrative about how “death comes to us all.” At the end, we see Cyclops fighting one or more Sentinels, ripping off his mask and unleashing the mother of all optical explosions.
Free the Cyclops

For long-time X-Men fans, this is one of those moments that makes you want to stand up and cheer. Cyclops is often written to be either incredibly boring, the butt of jokes, or both, so it’s cool to see him finally show off just how powerful his powers are. But it’s also a very recognizable moment for those of us long-time fans with long boxes full of comics…after all, that’s exactly what happened Astonishing X-Men (Section 2), #8, written by Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon.

The issue begins with a psionic attack that knocks out the X-Men’s various psychic characters, before the team is attacked by a very unique Sentinel who refers to serving an unknown “lord” and cryptically claims that “children will pay for the sins of their fathers.” Wolverine wanted to rush in and destroy the robot’s mainframe, but Cyclops told him, “There’s no time… I want this thing off my lawn.” At this point, he removed his mask and unleashed a massive optical blast, leaving a giant crater and a Sentinel, who could only mutter (before dying) that its master had ambitious plans that went far beyond a simple robot attack.
To this day, this is probably the coolest Cyclops moment in X-Men comic history. Even Wolverine was impressed, telling the team leader “Every now and then, Summers… I remember why you were in charge.” This is one of many great plot points from Joss Whedon Astonishing X-Men Running; he started writing the comic in 2004, a year after Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended and eight years before he directed it the Avengerschanging the course of the Marvel Cinematic Universe forever.
keep them red

Obviously, we don’t know what exactly happened to Cyclops or anyone else Avengers: Doomsday trailer, but the overall pacing is the same as what we’ve seen in the fan-favorite comic. The X-Men appear to be fighting at least one of the Sentinels (look closely and you can see the giant robot walking in the background), and he specifically removes his mask (usually used to limit his powers) to unleash a massive explosion, which seems to be to end the fight, as in Astonishing X-Men comics.
It’s impossible to know exactly how much canceled geek king Joss Whedon inspired the X-Men scene. Avengers: Doomsdaybut I feel really good about this visual tribute. Whatever your opinion of Whedon, he is a great writer and his work Astonishing X-Men Run is one of the best modern mutant comics ever written (perhaps second only to Grant Morrison’s New X-Men). If this preview accurately reflects Avengers: Doomsdayand then we’ll hear generations of jaded superhero fans utter words we never thought we’d hear again: “Make my Marvel!”
