Many film lovers and industry figures believe that Palme d’Or’s annual award is not only one of the highest honors of artistic achievement in the film world, but also the informal start of the awards season that follows the year, especially at the Academy of Film Arts and Sciences – an organization every spring, opening the Oscar group every spring to continue the international vote.
In recent years, films released at the Cannes Film Festival have become increasingly trapped in the Oscar hunting event. Over the past six years, two Palme d’Or winners – Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” and Sean Baker’s “Anora” – have also won the best photo of the Oscars. Before that, only the “Marty” in 1955 and the “Lost Weekend” in 1945 achieved the feat of winning these two highest awards.
The list of recent Palme winners who won at least the Academy Award for Best Picture Nominations include Justine Triet’s “Autumn Anatomy” (2023), Ruben Östlund’s “Sad Triangle” (2022), Michael Haneke’s “Amour” (2012) and Terrence Malick’s “Tree of Life” (2011). Last year’s Oscar lineup included several champions who arrived in Cannes first, including “Material”, “Emilia Perez” and “Apprentice”.
Among the filmmakers this year, Julia Ducournau and the Dardennes Brothers won Palme d’Or at previous festivals, Ducournau won “Rosetta” and “L’Enfant” for “Titane” and Dardennes. Dardennes is one of a group of filmmakers who won twice.
Earlier this week, festival organizers confirmed that Tom Cruise will return to Croisette with “Task: Impossible – Final Estimation,” even though they say the film will be shown in the competition. Cruise was awarded the Palme d’Or in 2022 when his film Top Gun: Maverick was screened at the Cannes Film Festival that year.
Organizers also announced that actor Robert De Niro will receive the Palm of Honor at the opening ceremony.
This year’s festival will be held from May 13 to 24.
