Chandler Bing of Vanderbilt talks about his name and college basketball

Vanderbilt’s Chandler Bing Know that you’ve heard his name before – but he swears he didn’t name it after being late Matthew Perry’s Beloved character Friends.
Of course, that didn’t stop the jokes from pouring in after Bing announced his decision to Upper Nashville School in Tennessee on Tuesday, April 29.
“My parents didn’t even think about the show,” he told Tennessee In an interview published on Friday, May 2. “My mom has seen this show, but when they named me, I don’t think she’s watching too much or even thinking about it.”
Bing added that although he had heard a lot of jokes related to friends throughout his life, he knew there was more as he continued his basketball career.
“I haven’t actually watched the show yet,” he said. “But I’ve never really encountered it (joke). Once people told me about it, I was like, ‘Okay, okay, I know I’m going to get a lot now.’ Transparent
The young basketball star also told the media that he chose Vanderbilt because he wanted to compete at a high level in the SEC. “Fighting against the best people…that’s definitely a big part of that,” he said. “For me, it was a very easy decision. Go there, see the campus, the facilities, the city. It’s definitely a place where I can grow on and off the court.”
Vanderbilt is also home to a talented women’s basketball team Mikayla Blakes And junior Khamil Pierre. The two joined their teammates Sasha Washington and Justine Pissott May 2-May 4, at the 2025 US Basketball 3X Nationals at Arizona Track and Field in Mesa, Arizona.
The event presented 16 teams who hope to win the 3×3 championship and evaluate a place in the 3×3 national team of basketball in the United States. Other teams for the event are from Fairfield, Florida, James Madison, Oklahoma, Richmond, South Carolina, South Dakota, Stephen F. Austin and TCU.
Blacks, Pierre and Pissott played a major role in leading Vanderbilt’s women’s basketball team into a second-game winning streak and in the matches in the Crazy Championship this March.
In the 2024-25 season, Blacks averaged 23.3 points per game and was named USBWA Tamika Catchings Freshman of the Year and SEC Freshman of the Year. Pierre averaged 20.4 points per game and was named by the WBCA National Honor nominated team.
