Chatgpt Plus is now free. This is what to know

Openai provides free Chatgpt plus services to all college students in the United States and Canada. The company launched a webpage to specify who meets the criteria and what is included.

Chatgpt Plus is typically $20 per month and offers faster responses to chatbot services and doesn’t limit users to things like image generation, the company has just begun limiting the service with a free service that is limited to several uses at a time. Students at eligible degree schools will receive two months of Chatgpt Plus until the offer ends on May 31.

The Student Web page contains a tool that allows students to see if their school is eligible and seek help if it is not on the list. Chatgpt also validates students through several methods listed on the website.

Openai’s Chatgpt service has recently attracted a rise in popularity due to its improved image generation tools. Chatgpt reportedly has about 150 million active weekly users.

What does this mean for students

Mark van Rijmenam, author of Strategic Futurist and Future Vision, said that free access to Chatgpt’s remodeled AI image generator and its other features, such as research summary and real-time conversations, will open up more AI familiarity.

“This will help students become more familiar with these powerful AI tools,” Van Rijmenam said. “However, providing access is not enough. We need to teach students how to use these tools and how to leverage them.”

Last year, Openai launched Chatgpt Edu, a version of its AI tool for colleges, which, along with free quotes, may indicate that the company is driving more education efforts.

Van Rijmenam said the university itself should adjust its courses. “So, no longer learning rote memorization, which has become less relevant in the age of AI, but rather teaching students how to embrace AI responsibly.”
