Chicago police warn of armed robberies linked to social media meetings

CHICAGO (WGN) — Chicago police are issuing a warning to the public after a series of armed robberies on the Far South Side linked to social media gatherings.

Police said the incident occurred at the following time and location:

  • August 13, 2025 2:15 pm 12400 block of S State St (West Pullman)

  • August 20, 2025 3:10 AM W 111th St 1500 block (south side)

  • August 20, 2025 4:00 a.m. 11800 block of S La Sale Street (West Pullman)

  • September 2, 2025 12:30 AM W 108th Pl 1 Block (Roseland)

  • October 16, 2025 7:30 pm E 105th St 300 block (Roseland)

  • October 23, 2025 6:57 AM 100 block of West 127th Street (West Pullman)

In each incident, the victims used social media applications to meet people in person. After agreeing on a time and place to meet, the suspect pulled out a handgun and forced the victim to hand over property and wire money electronically, investigators said.

Police did not release descriptions of the suspects, saying only that they were armed with handguns.

Other tips for CPD:

  • Always be aware of your surroundings.

  • Report suspicious activity immediately.

  • If you encounter an attacker, remain calm.

  • Remember any unique physical features (scars, limps, acne, teeth, etc.).

  • Never pursue a fleeing attacker; provide information to the police.

  • If there is video surveillance, keep a copy of the incident for detectives.

  • If contacted by witnesses of the incident, please request their contact information.

  • If making a sale or purchase, use the police station as a meeting point.
