Chicago Wolves sign Peter Kochetkov on loan from Carolina Hurricanes

Pyotr Kochetkov returns to the AHL with the Chicago Wolves.

The Carolina Hurricanes activated the 26-year-old goaltender from injured reserve on Friday and sent him to Chicago for conditioning work. A lower-body injury has ruled him out for the season. The Wolves will face the Toronto Marlies on Saturday night (8 p.m. ET) and Sunday afternoon (4 p.m. ET). Both games can be watched on FloHockey.

Kochetkov led the Wolves to a 5-1 Calder Cup win in 2022 | 1.65 | 1.65 .950 that postseason. The 2019 second-round draft pick arrived in North America midway through the 2021-22 regular season after playing 23 games in the KHL with the Nizhny Novgorod Torpedoes. He split time between Carolina and Chicago in 2022-23. He played three games with Syracuse during the 2023-24 season when the Hurricanes did not have their own AHL affiliate before remaining with Carolina full-time.

2025 Toronto Marlies vs Chicago Wolves

He had a 27-16-3 record last season | 2.60 with a .898 OPS in 47 games for the Hurricanes. Carolina signed him to a four-year contract extension in November 2022, which will carry him through next season.

The Wolves will benefit from Kochetkov’s AHL tenure, which will last a maximum of two weeks. Carolina faced a goaltending upheaval on the depth chart after training camp, a situation that also affected the Wolves. Carolina lost Cayden Primeau, who would have been the Wolves’ top netminder, to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Oct. 6. Losing Primo means Wolves will resort to a combination of Amir Miftakhov and Nikita Quapp.

Chicago started 3-2-1-0, but head coach Cam Abbott pulled Quapp after scoring four goals in the first period in last Tuesday’s 6-1 home loss to the Rockford IceHogs. After a cleanup assignment against Rockford, Miftakhov gave up four goals to the Milwaukee Admirals the next night. Miftakhov is 2-1-0 | 3.27 | 3.27 with a .878 mark in four appearances, while Quapp is 1-1-1 | 4.22 | 4.22 .896. Miftakhov signed with Carolina as a free agent in the offseason after a stellar KHL season with AK Bars Kazan, but he has not played in an AHL game since the 2021-22 season. Quapp had only 34 DEL games of experience before coming to North America this season.

Kochetkov’s assignment gives him plenty of potential playing time. After this weekend’s game, the Wolves will have four games in seven days before the end of his adjustment period.

However, his eventual return to the Carolina roster will also force the 7-4-0 Hurricanes to consider how they plan to construct their goalie corps. In Kochetkov’s absence, incumbent Frederik Andersen has started seven of Carolina’s first 11 games this season, alongside Brandon Bussi, with a record of 4-3-0 | 2.96 | 2.96 .894. He stopped 20 shots in a 2-1 road loss to the Boston Bruins on Saturday afternoon.

The 27-year-old Bussey, 3-1-0 | 2.25 | 2.25 .916, spent the past three seasons with the Boston-based Providence Bruins before signing with the Florida Panthers as a free agent on July 1 in his first four NHL games. However, Carolina claimed him off of Florida on Oct. 5 after training camp with the Panthers. The next day, the Hurricanes lost their own offseason signee, Primo. Busey last played last Thursday night when he made 26 saves in a 6-2 home win over the New York Islanders.
