Türkiye urges quick ceasefire in Ukrainian war to support EU measures

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan delivered a speech on Friday in favor of a ceasefire in the Ukrainian war.

Erdoğan said at a video conference held by leaders of the European Union organization that Ankara advocates “stop air and sea aggression…and establish an emergency ceasefire”.

France has proposed a ceasefire in the air and at sea for a month as a step towards a possible peace agreement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also showed such a limited ceasefire.

Türkiye’s leaders added that Türkiye is trying to participate in possible future EU mechanisms to achieve security and reconstruction in Ukraine.

Erdoğan also stressed the importance of a “solid diplomatic foundation” bringing both sides to the negotiating table.

NATO member Türkiye has good relations with Russia and Ukraine, and Erdogan has previously said Türkiye will be the “ideal” place for potential peace talks.
