Kenya’s Mike Sonko’s image has nothing to do with Chinese investors and Vietnamese death row prisoners
Kenyan country Margaret Nduta was convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to death in Vietnam in March 2025, but she was awarded a last-minute execution when the Kenyan government appealed. A post about Tiktok claimed to show former governor of Nairobi, Vietnam, Mike Sonko, his alleged release in negotiations on Nduta. But the claim is wrong; Sonko denies carrying out his mission of compassion for Vietnam, clarifying that the person he showed with him in the video was the Chinese investors he met in his office in Nairobi. He will release multiple images on the same day with investors on X.

The post has been shared over 1,100 times.
Nduta, 37, was convicted of drug trafficking and handed over to death penalty March 6, 2025 at the People’s Court in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (archive) here).
She was arrested in July 2023 at the city’s international airport with more than two kilograms of cocaine.

“I’ve seen a stupid story claiming I’ve landed in Vietnam to prevent the execution of Margaret Nduta. It comes from the username account of the African sponsor. This photo is from yesterday and these photos are from China,” Sonko said in Swahili in part.
“This is not Vietnam. From the photos, you can see this clock and the background in my office. The people in the photos are not even Vietnamese. They are Chinese.” He pointed out that the video and the matching features in his office.
Both videos show the red carpet and the golden bell and wallpaper in the background.

Located in the Upper Mountain area of Nairobi, the office also appears in previous posts by Sonko (archived here and here).
In the X video, he also shows supplements and medications arranged on the table, saying they are the only “medicines” he deals with.
He has been linked to the drug trafficking trade in Kenya in the past, accusing him of Dannys (Archive here and here).
Additionally, Sonko urged the Criminal Investigation Bureau (DCI) to track down and arrest individuals who helped Nduta send drugs into Vietnam and get them executed, believing she might have been pawns.
