Dancing with the Stars’ Shanna Burgess reflects on past eating disorder

“My body was really struggling because of dancing,” Burgess told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation In good health magazine in a 2021 interview. “I remember when I was 15, the teacher weighed me every two days and we were told if we needed to lose weight. Every week I was told I needed to lose more weight, and I certainly wasn’t overweight.”

She continued, “While dance was something I needed in my life, it really instilled a negative body image in me. It also started a negative eating pattern where I would overeat one day and starve the next. I struggled with this for years. Even in my 20s, I would see that 15-year-old girl in the mirror who was told every week that she needed to lose weight.”

Burgess came to appreciate her physique after joining the cast Distributed WTS 2011.

“Seeing the celebrities on the show transform their bodies by moving and dancing and ultimately falling in love with their bodies really shook my perspective,” she explains. “I thought, ‘Wow, I’ve been doing this my whole life.’ I started seeing something else in the mirror, and I started seeing a body that helped me get through some incredibly difficult times, create some great moments, win championships, and allow me to live a life that I never imagined.”
