Decathlon revenue growth of 5.2% in 2024
French sporting goods retailer Decathlon Group reported revenue growth of 5.2% in 2024, with continued exchange rate growth compared to the previous year driven by excitement surrounding the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
When adjusted for adverse currency volatility, the company’s revenue still rose 3.8% to 16.2 billion euros ($17.5 billion).
Digital transactions account for one-fifth of DeCathlon’s total revenue, including online sales, marketing operations and digitally enabling in-store purchases.
The retailer is responsible for designing and producing formal clothing for 45,000 volunteers at the Summer Olympics. It sold 1.8 million licensed products in the year.
The decathlon also recorded a significant surge in store traffic, up 10% during the Olympics and 6.7% during the Paralympics.
Retailers have managed to increase revenues while reducing carbon emissions for three consecutive years, down 13% since 2021.
Nearly half (48.5%) of the items sold in their stores in 2024 were developed using environmentally friendly design principles.
Decathlon also facilitated the sale of 1.35 million second-hand products and repaired three million items through its extensive network of repair studios.
Retailers cut their single-use plastic packaging usage by more than 53.29% over the year, reducing the figure from 2,646 tons to just 1,236T.
Decathlon also consolidated its dominance in rental services, accounting for half of the market share in Italy and Spain.
In August 2024, it pledged 100 million euros ($111 million) over the next five years to enhance its retail business and enhance its manufacturing capabilities.
A similar investment strategy has been deployed in Germany, and Decathlon plans to allocate up to 100 million euros by 2027 to open new stores and renovate existing stores.
