Deutsche Railway warns personal van service not profitable

Sigrid Evelyn Nikutta, a member of the Deutsche Bahn AG freight board and chairman of the DB Cargo AG management board, spoke with a reporter from Deutsche Press-Agentur in an interview. Kay Nietfeld/DPA

Company executive Sigrid Nikutta told DPA that single-truck freight is a loss of DB goods from Deutsche Train’s freight business and can be closed.

“Either we are trying to build bike transport in a financially sustainable way in Germany, or we can’t operate in this form anymore,” Nikutta said.

Personal services of state-owned railway operators – collecting trucks directly from the company, combining them into the train with the shunt code, and then delivering in the reverse order – is important for steel, chemicals, construction and other sectors.

The loss sector has been supported by the German government, but Nikota stressed that the instructions of the EU, the German government and the Oversight Commission now require profitability.

DB cargo is facing restructuring and will have 5,000 jobs by 2029.

EU rules say databases can no longer balance losses with profits in their subsidiaries.
