“I think actually coming out here and playing in a tournament will actually help. It will get my mind back to what I need to do this week more.

“It was interesting to have the issues after winning the Ryder Cup, but I’m excited to get back on the court.”

Donald was asked some other Ryder Cup questions on Tuesday.

– He answers what qualities Rory McIlroy possesses to become Ryder Cup captain.

“Well, the truth is he loves the Ryder Cup more than anything,” Donald said. “He made it very clear that winning the Ryder Cup on the road would really be the icing on the cake for what has been an amazing year for him.

“Yes, he loves what it represents. You’ve seen the emotion from defeat to victory. I think anyone who has a passion for the Ryder Cup will make a good captain.”

– When he was asked if he would be captain in 2027, he gave the reaction of being called Europe’s greatest captain.

“Well, I’m still trying to enjoy this, whether it’s being a captain or not being a captain,” Donald said. “If I don’t become captain in two years’ time and the captain wants me to stay there, then I’m sure I’ll be happy to help him in any way he wants.

“Yeah, I’m very humbled when someone says you’re the greatest captain. Maybe it’s just a little bit of a reaction at the moment, but I certainly – I’ve put a lot of work into this. I’m very happy with the results that have come out of it, but you need those 12 players. You need the backroom team. You need the vice-captain. You need a lot of other people to make that happen.

“Sure, I play a role, but I play a small part in the bigger picture. I certainly couldn’t do it without the tremendous support behind us.”

– A reporter then suggested that Donald needed to inspire the European team before asking how one produces a winner.

“Well, I kind of disagree. I don’t think it’s my job to inspire them,” Donald said. “These are highly motivated players. The Ryder Cup is huge and my job is to create a little bit of cohesion and make sure we bring all these players together under a common theme and inspire them and get them hungry to win.

“We talk a lot about our history. We talk a lot about the players who have come before us. We talk about our role as ambassadors of the game to inspire the next generation.

“I think the Ryder Cup is very meaningful to a lot of players and it brings out the best in them. So my job is really to create a culture, an environment where they feel like they can compete at a very high level because of the dangers they face.”
