Embed the role of a mental health consultant

Mental health challenges are one of the biggest threats to students’ durability and retention in higher education, but providing large-scale prevention and responsive mental health care is an imminent challenge for colleges and universities.

In addition to having enough clinicians and trained professionals to support students in crisis, the approach to supporting health before students are in crisis is crucial.

One strategy is to embed mental health consultants into a student space or academic department. By integrating services into physical locations, such as student centers, clinicians can connect with students in informal and intentional ways, gain trust and support the specific pockets of the campus community.

In this episode of Voice of Student Success, host Host Ashley Mowreader talks with Dartmouth College’s chief health officer Estevan Garcia to learn more about public health approaches to mental health support at university campuses. Later, it was heard by Casey Fox, associate director of Integrated Services, which led the University’s Integrated Mental Health Program, how his efforts have expanded.
