EPA says we really don’t need the “low def” li-line mode in the truck after all

According to President Donald Trump, the “One” actor, the EPA has been taking the axe to emission regulations, “this doesn’t mean a little different to the environment.” EPA administrator Lee Zeldin just announced the latest CHOP at the Iowa State Fair, requiring diesel engines to eliminate speed and reduce lining modes when starting with a 2027 truck on diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). He also strongly urged manufacturers to update their old trucks to eliminate this nagware.

Granted, making your truck NERF itself annoying, just because you haven’t let the Adblue liquid go down yet. But worries are the key. DEF is mixed with gases in the diesel engine exhaust to reduce harmful nitrogen (NOX) emissions. According to the EPA website, this helps prevent smoke and acid rain unless they scrub this information while reading. Asthma patients are particularly vulnerable to dyspnea in NOX emissions, but I don’t think any of us like to breathe smoke from a truck that rolls coal.

These new regulations actually violate the EPA requirements on diesel vehicles using DEF. On EPA’s own website, such requirements are:

  • Preventive System: This system must be designed to prevent tampering or bypassing DEF usage.

However, EPA’s new guide is a guide to effectively eliminating annoying speed limiters and reducing power through tamper-proof systems. Is there anything that stops the driver from using DEF at all? When I lived in the north, I drove with the TPMS warning light all winter because I was too cheap to buy a tire pressure sensor for the winter wheels and tire sets. Likewise, the low-defense dashboard warning light does not prevent anyone from running without it, effectively bypassing DEF usage against EPA regulations. Such a warning may fail the status emission test, but it is simple enough to add enough DEF to turn it off and then don’t refill it before the next check.

I don’t like the idea of diesel vehicles keeping ransom until you comply with its requirements. However, I do like to breathe clean air, no smoke or acid rain, and not suffer asthma attacks while riding a motorcycle after riding a diesel truck. Sadly, I don’t think we can trust drivers to do the right thing without some kind of punishment, especially if what we want them to do is inconvenient.
