EU MPs urge defense to prepare for “close to war”
EU lawmakers said in a non-binding resolution on Wednesday that preparedness for national defense must be “close to wartime” and called for more aid to Ukraine.
“Today, Europe is facing the deepest military threat since the Cold War.” The resolution reads: “The resolution was 419 votes in favor, 204 votes against and 46 abstentions.”
The resolution called Russia “the most direct and indirect threat to the EU” and highlighted how a sharp shift in Ukraine’s war policy exacerbated the EU’s security concerns.
The resolution states that in the event of war or other major security crises, the EU must be able to move “across the process” and calls for European pillars to be solicited in NATO, able to take action automatically if necessary.
Members of the European Parliament called for stronger partnerships with like-minded people and reduce dependence on non-EU countries to ensure the group’s own security.
With support from Ukraine, the resolution urges EU countries, international partners and NATO members to “removal of restrictions on the use of Western weapons systems that ship to Ukraine to military targets on Russian territory,” the release said.
