EU Parliamentary Committee votes to cancel immunity of far-right German MEP
European Parliament members said in Brussels on Wednesday that the European Parliament Judicial Committee has voted to recommend that a leading MP’s immunity be promoted from the far-right Germany (AFD) to investigate.
Petr Bystron is accused of receiving money from European pro-Russian media voices in order to support Russia in the federal government of the House of Commons.
The immunity of lawmakers can only be completely eliminated by most members of the European Parliament (MEP) throughout the chamber – as in a separate case earlier this month, associated with an article on social media, portraying German politicians’ execution of a controversial gesture.
Bystron repeatedly denied the allegations and summoned a politically motivated lawsuit.
The federal government initially removed his immunity in the bribery case in May, followed by several searches before being elected to the European Parliament in June.
According to Bystron, 21 searches failed to provide any evidence against him.
“I look forward to seeing what I found by asking my mother about dementia and searching her room in her retirement home,” Bystron told DPA.
