Former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy has a very relatable take on golf

Greg McElroy won the 2010 BCS National Championship as quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He then played a few seasons in the NFL before hanging up his sneakers.
Now, McElroy is one of ESPN’s top college football commentators and color analysts. He also has a 4.7 handicap and dreams of getting better. McElroy was a guest on the latest episode of GOLF Not good podcast and discussed his golf game and goals with co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz.
Like many elite athletes, McElroy sometimes believed he could play golf well. But like many, the game quickly humbled him.
“I definitely had moments where I was like, ‘I could do this really well,'” McElroy said. “Then I’ll quickly remind myself that when I hook, or three-putt, or drive the ball off the green, I’m like, ‘I’m never going to be good.’” I’m probably as good as I will be now, even though part of me still aspires to be a good handicapper. I don’t think I’ll ever get there – I’m too stupid. However, at some point I hope to achieve this. “

McElroy is currently working with top swing coach Mark Blackburn, but admits the famed coach understands the former signal-caller’s simplistic view of the game.
“He would say, ‘Load the club Greg, put it down,'” McElroy said. “I thought, ‘I don’t know what that means.’ He said, ‘45, 46 degrees, Greg. “Like Mark, let me swing hard. Now he’s finally getting to the point where he’s like this guy doesn’t know what he’s doing. He’s going to swing hard. He’s going to be a sucker. He’s strong and we’ll figure it out. He’s got good speed, but he probably doesn’t know where it’s going to go. So, when it comes to clubface control, I think it’s overrated. Just, look at the ball, hit the ball. That’s about it.”
