German politicians express condolences after fatal Mannheim incident
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed “the deepest sympathy” to relatives of the victims of the fatal incident in Mannheim on Monday.
Two people were killed and several others were injured when one person drove the car into a group of people in the center of Mannheim.
“What they have to go through is awful,” Steinmeier said on X’s spokesman.
The president hopes those injured will recover quickly and thanks the police and emergency services.
Germany’s next Prime Minister Friedrich Merz also expressed his condolences. “My idea is to be with the victim and their families,” the Conservative leader posted on X.
“Just like the horrible behavior of the past few months, this incident is a clear reminder that we must do everything we can to prevent it,” he wrote, adding that Germany must become a safe country again.
The alleged driver, a 40-year-old German citizen, has been detained.
The damaged vehicle stands on the access to the Rhine Bridge. Two people died and several were injured after driving into a crowd in Mannheim, southwestern Germany, security sources said. Boris Roessler/DPA
