Germany reopens Syrian embassy for the first time since 2012
Germany reopened its embassy in Damascus on Thursday three months after former President Bashar al-Assad’s removal.
The embassy was officially opened by Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock when visiting the Syrian capital.
The embassy was closed after the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2012.
Al-Assad ruled Syria for more than twenty years. He fled to Russia after a lightning attack led by the Islamic group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham late last year.
Since then, the new transitional government led by President Ahmed Al-Sharaa has been working to restore security and restore the economy.
Baerbock will meet Al-Sharaa during the visit.
