Giants move Jordan Hicks to bullpen

The giant has moved right-handed Jordan Hicks Become a bullpen role. Hicks’ position in the starting spin will be transferred to the right handed Hayden Birdsongit is now scheduled to start traveling to San Francisco against the Royals on May 20. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle first suggested that the club discuss the possibility of pulling Hicks out of the rotation this afternoon, and manager Bob Melvin later confirmed the changes to journalists (including Slusser) and announced the match Tuesday.

Just last week, Melvin’s suggestion that moving Hicks out of the rotation was not something the giants started to discuss. However, just a few days later, Hicks suffered his worst start against the Rattlers this season as he was burned five times in just two innings. At that time, he surrendered seven hits (including home runs) and one walk while recording only one strikeout. It seems that the outing raises the Hicks era to 6.55 this season. It was an unfortunate ending for Hicks rotation time, especially given that the peripheral numbers are usually quite favorable in working with the club’s right-handed this year. Righty’s 20.3% strikeout rate doesn’t exactly jump out of the page, but he only walked 7.9% of his opponents and produced an incredible 57.4% ground ball rate. It’s the sixth highest ground rate of all qualified starters this year, and of the five names above him, Webb allows only less close connections than Hicks’ tiny 27.7% clips. That elite contact management has been blocked by a high .362 BABIP and a shocking 56.7% stock rate. These figures suggest that bad luck and poor sorting may be the culprit of Hicks’ struggles, while his 3.48 FIP and 3.74 Siera further backed up these ideas.

3.79 Ranked 30th in baseball games this year with qualifying starters Clay Sherlock Holmes and Freddy Peralta. While Hicks’ peripheral numbers may indicate potential performance, it’s hard to say it’s too early to move to the bullpen. Hicks, the worst qualified starter in the league this year, actually dating back to last season when he released an ugly 8.18 ERA with a 6.44 FIP in the last five games of his year before moving to the bullpen in the second half and returning with a 1.17 ERA in August.

Although given the above powerful peripherals, it is impossible to imagine Hicks looking at it again in the spin, it may take a lot of damage to achieve this. After all, the Giants have too much introductory talent Kyle Harrison That’s the point this season so far. Birdsong, who started last year’s rookie with a 16-shot start at the age of 16, did everything he could expect to start with a 2.31 ERA and a 23 1/3 inning 3-point shooting percentage as a multi-inning relief arm. Righty’s 9.9% walking rate improved, but his 3.68 Siera was even better than the Hicks this year. As for Harrison, Southpaw started the season among minors, playing only three games in the major league level so far this year, although he beat 31.3% of his opponents with a 2.25 ERA in limited work.
