High waves sweep three people off a Big Sur beach, the second such incident in a week

A huge wave swept three people off a beach into the ocean in Big Sur on Saturday, the second such incident in a week at Galapatta State Park.

Two women and a man were swept off rocks at Sobrenas Point around 3pm, according to one man. Press release From California State Parks.

The two women made it back to shore and were taken to hospital with unknown injuries, but a man who was traveling with them (believed to be about 30 years old) is still missing.

“At approximately 4:24 p.m., a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter discovered what appeared to be a body in the ocean, but nothing was visible due to high surf,” park officials said.

The search was called off around 7pm due to darkness and was due to resume Sunday morning.

The missing man was wearing a white bandana, black shorts, a black shirt and a black vest.

The National Weather Service warned that waves of 13 to 18 feet were expected at Big Sur and Monterey beaches Monday night and warned beachgoers to stay off rocks and stay away from the water.

“Sneaker waves may unexpectedly extend further onto the beach than normal, including over rocks and piers,” Meteorological department advice. “Rip currents are generally more frequent and stronger near breakwaters, inlets and docks.”

Last week, a 7-year-old girl was swept into the ocean at the same park. She and her 39-year-old father jumped into the water to save her and both died.
