Homicide suspect died after SWAT confrontation, shelter held in Griffin
The homicide suspect died and police canceled the shelter alert after a SWAT standoff in Spalding County.
The deadlock occurred on Ashley Drive, with representatives from Griffin Police and Spalding assisting Jonesboro police in the investigation. Officials have not identified the suspect, but say he was wanted in connection with the death of a Jonesboro woman.
“We’ve been in a stalemate here for hours and since then, the suspects did fire the gun when we shut him down with the SWAT team,” said Jonesboro Police Chief CE Cato.

The Jonesboro Police Department has been searching for suspects since the deadly apartment fire earlier Saturday. Kato said his officers found a woman dead in the apartment but were sure she did not die in the fire.
Police tracked the suspect to his home in Griffin and asked for assistance from other jurisdictions.
Police said the suspect and the victim knew each other. Kato said the man’s family tried to help them in the negotiation process.
“They don’t want to see anything happening to their loved ones. They don’t want to see anything happening to law enforcement,” Kato said. “It’s a sad day for multiple families.”
