House attacks considered hate crimes

Police are treating an attack on a house in Bangor, County Down, as a hate crime.

The incident was reported to police at around 22:10 BST on Monday.

The kitchen window of the house in Ganaway Walk, Kilcooley, was smashed. Police have asked anyone with information to contact them.

MPs in the area described the attack as “despicable” and a “senseless act of intimidation”.

Bangor mayor and Alliance councilor Gillian McCollum told BBC News NI she was “shocked” by the attack.

McCollum described it as “a senseless act of intimidation” “designed to instill fear in this community.”

She said: “This is a borough where we all belong equally and I have no reservations in condemning the person behind this behaviour.”

She encouraged people to work with police to help “address and put an end to this type of behaviour”.

DUP MP Carl McLean also condemned the attack.

“No matter what the reason or motivation, no one needs to have this happen to them,” he said.

“No one here wants this. It doesn’t help any cause or the people who live here.

“Whoever did this, I want them to know that they have no support whatsoever from the people who live here or from any elected representatives.

“This is despicable.”

Police have asked anyone with information to contact them.
