Is “Nobody Saw Us Leaving” based on a true story?
Yes. No one saw us leave based on author Tamara Trottner2020 autobiography of the same name. It details the ordeal she endured as a child in a wealthy Jewish-Mexican family when she and her brother were taken from their mother by their father. The first line of the book is: “I have just turned five, and this is the last day of my childhood.”
The autobiography details the parental abduction, in which her father moved them multiple times to different countries around the world over three years, all in an effort to keep them away from their mother. When Valeria Goldberg (Tessa Ya) mistakes in marriage, her husband Leo (Emiliano Zurita) began plotting to keep his children away from her. Leo is the son of an influential businessman, and his family wants nothing more than to ruin his wife’s reputation and ostracize her from the community.
It’s an interesting look at the status of wealthy women in the 1960s, and how social pressure, expectations, the desire to be the perfect mother, and fear of shame ultimately led Valeria to do what she did and immediately fall out of favor with her elite, insular community. One wrong move, one move that falters beneath the façade of perfection, and the rich are instantly cannibalizing each other.
The plot is a thrilling journey around the world
When Leo left Valeria with his children, they moved to many countries around the world over the years – and Valeria followed suit. Along with the characters, the audience is taken to several countries, including South Africa, France and Israel, as Leo moves on and Valeria follows him.
Shortly after Valeria realizes her children are missing, she hires Elias, a former Mossad agent and current private investigator, to help her track them down. So we travel around the world with Valeria, Leo and the kids in a tragic cat-and-mouse game. At the same time, Valeria also had a dispute with Leo’s family in Mexico, who did everything they could to destroy their daughter-in-law’s reputation.

Providing just the right amount of information, stakes, and suspense keeps the plot at the right pace, all of which leads to a very satisfying ending.
