Of the 3517 things that make Oakmont difficult: its smooth and slanted green.
Viktor Hovland talked about the importance of distance control and lag after 68 points in the second round, which was the importance of Oakmont, the tour’s best putt Sam Burns responded, who shot an incredible 65 on Friday and admitted that he didn’t even try to get his 15-20-foot guys trying to make them “snugg snugg snugg snugg snoog snugle”. Jon Rahm said after 75 points in the second round that he was frustrated by the number of “good putts” and felt “no sniffing holes.”
On Thursday, the fiery surface got his best in Jason Day, who missed five slides of 12 feet or more, gave up 1.61 on putts and hit a 76-sixth somber rate.
After his round, Day went behind the 9th green scattered in Oakmont, which was the practice area. Day’s Taylormade Spider Tour Putter wasn’t exactly right for him, so he put things into his hand and bent the putter into a more pleasing shape.
“Just as long as I bend myself manually and stand on it,” Dai said Friday after the second round. “That’s how I’ve done it in the past. It’s not great for me personally, it looks a little hat-like, the grip is a little closed, so it’s not positive for me. But I bent down enough to make it look more open, which is great.”
More like great.
In his second round, Day’s putters from Um wonderful. On a day when the score average was hanging around 76.4, four birdies and an eagle were made in one day and shot three-thirds with a 67 shot. At the time of writing, he scored 1.66 on the green. In his highlights, he was a 24-foot player who stabbed the birdie at the age of 7 and he created 19 feet for the Eagle 3 in a 12-foot game.
“It’s been much better today,” he said. (Yes, by the way, the rules allow patching between the entire putts.)
Day was outstanding on the Greens a year ago, finishing 9th in the Tour (+0.541) and getting a stroke: putter. This year, he is much more proficient, ranking 113th in the category (-0.060).
