“Eric and I have been separated and going through painful times in our marriage,” Simpson told Us Weekly in a statement at the time. “Our children come first and we are focused on what is best for them. We appreciate all the love and support we have been given and value our privacy now as we work through this as a family.”
Simpson and Johnson met in 2010, tied the knot four years later, and seemed to remain on good terms throughout their split. In August, the two were spotted boarding a Southwest Airlines flight from Burbank to Las Vegas, sitting in the same row with an empty seat in the middle. That weekend they attended a concert by Jessica’s sister Ashley in Las Vegas.
“I don’t know why my heart is messed up, but I’m one of the lucky ones,” Jessica, who split amicably from Johnson in February, told People. “At least I have my kids and I still have Eric. He’s still a part of my life and always will be.”
Simpson has celebrated some major milestones during her separation from Johnson. In September, she released new music for the first time in 15 years. Later, on November 1, she celebrated eight years of sobriety.
“Eight years ago today, I decided to face, confess, and let go of the self-sabotaging parts of my chosen life,” Simpson wrote on Instagram at the time. “Making this decision has allowed me to live fully in my pursuit of God[sic] My life goals. Alcohol suppressed my intuition, stunted my dreams, and dispelled my fear of complacency. “
Simpson continued, “Today I was clear. Today I was driven by faith. Fear and faith are both things we can feel but may not see, and I’m glad I chose faith over fear. I found my strength not in battle, but in surrender.”
