Latvia plans to ensure good progress on the eastern border

Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds said on Friday that planned construction of Latvia and Belarus stocks planned on Latvia’s eastern border is planned to be completed in 2028.

“This work is going as planned,” he said.

There are many concrete and tank obstacles stored there that will be used to defend and protect the eastern border of Latvia.

The work aims to establish the Baltic Sea defense line, with Latvia and its neighboring Baltic countries Estonia and Lithuania seeking to protect themselves from potential attacks.

Sprūds said the protection facilities were designed to enable Latvian troops to defend the country and its population from the first centimeters.

“The main goal is to stop, distract and disrupt potential intruders,” he stressed.

In addition, tank ditches, ammunition depots and mine storage facilities will be built.

In some parts of the total 400 km long border with Russia and Belarus, this is also the EU’s external border, and the construction of the line has been completed.

Last year, the Latvian government decided to invest about 300 million euros (US$340 million) to strengthen the border and establish a defense line in line with NATO’s defense plan by 2028.

This year, €45 million will be allocated for this purpose, including mines and sensor systems. In addition to military infrastructure, air defense and cooperation with local industries should also be strengthened.
