When Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram won Saturday’s tag team rubber match at Delray Beach, the U.S. appeared to control the second round of its Davis Cup qualifier against the Czech Republic. But Jiri Lehecka and Jakub Mensik have their own plans.
Lehecka keeps the hopes of the 5th place player Taylor Fritz in the PIF ATP rankings. Mensik then defeated his country 3-2 with a late-night victory against Frances Tiafoe.
During a long day in Florida, Lehecka walked into court at her home in Delray Beach Open, knowing he needed to overcome a record 0-4 Lexus ATP Head2head vs. Fritz. The recent U.S. Open players have done this, upsetting Americans 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Fritz fought against Czech, who beat the Czech in his last match in Toronto less than two months ago. But Lehecka put consistent pressure on the top-ranked players in the tie, winning 17 breakout points and converting three of them to 2-2.
This gives Mensik the opportunity to play a hero in the same state, claiming the ATP Masters 1000 glory at the Miami Open proposed by ITAU earlier this year. The 23-year-old softened his country with a score of 6-1, 6-4 around a midnight stroke.
Paris Olympic silver medalists Krajicek and Ram beat Tomas Machac and Mensik 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-4 to 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-4 to give the United States a 2-1 advantage.
The countries that are already eligible for the Davis Cup final are defending champions Italy, Czech Republic, Argentina, Austria, Germany and France.
