LIV Golf ‘proactive’ moves to 72-hole championship

LIV Golf, which positions itself as a faster-paced alternative to the PGA Tour with 54-hole championships, shotgun events and team events, will move to a 72-hole event starting in 2026, the league announced Tuesday.

The shotgun tournament, along with concurrent individual and team tournaments, will still be part of the LIV Golf League, but its tournaments will be extended by one round and typically begin on Thursdays.

“The most successful leagues in the world – IPL, EPL, NBA, MLB, NFL – are constantly innovating and evolving their products, and as an emerging league, we are no exception,” LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neill said in a statement. “LIV Golf will always focus on advancements that are in the best interests of LIV Golf and the sport.”

The league, funded by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, is seeking inclusion in the official World Golf Rankings to help its golfers gain pathways to major championships. OWGR rejected its application for the first season in October 2023.

OWGR officials said applications were rejected in part because the league is a closed shop and individual results can be affected by team competition. All golfer scores now count toward the team standings.

LIV Golf reapplied for OWGR accreditation in July.

“Everyone wants to see the best players in the world compete against each other, especially in the majors, and in order for the tournament to continue, we need a path forward,” Crushers GC captain Bryson DeChambeau said in a statement.

“By moving to 72 holes, LIV Golf is taking a proactive step to align with a historically recognized format globally. This is a fantastic evolution of the LIV Golf product and demonstrates how our league listens and adapts to create the best possible experience.”

The LIV Golf 2026 season will kick off February 4-7 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
