Meta tries to stop a former employee from promoting her Facebook book
Meta scored an early victory by trying to block a surprise all-around memoir from a former policy director. The authors of the book should stop selling and promoting the book, which began selling earlier this week, said the social media company arbitrator.
The drama originated from Careless personWynn-Williams revealed a new book by Sarah Wynn-Williams, a Facebook official who was fired in 2017, a former Facebook policy official. She also misbehaved that Meta’s Joel Kaplan and revealed Zuckerberg’s embarrassing encounter with world leaders
The book was announced only last week, with Meta launching a powerful PR campaign against “news books for news.” Wynn-Williams has many records of former employees about the events she had while working on Facebook.
Mehta also filed an emergency motion with the arbitrators in an attempt to stop the book, believing that Wynn-Williams had violated a non-separation agreement with the company. In her decision, the arbitrator said she should immediately stop making disparaging comments about the meta-comment and stop “further publishing or distribution” the book. It is not clear what this means for the book. Publisher Flatiron Books was also named in Meta’s complaint and did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
“This ruling affirms that Sarah Wynn Williams’ false and libelous books should never be published,” Meta spokesman Andy Stone said. “Williams had to take such urgent legal action, and Williams was terminated by the company for more than eight years, deliberately covering up the existence of her book project and avoiding the industry’s standard fact-checking process in order to get it on the shelves after waiting for eight years.”
