Mexico Beach Coastline almost recovers after Hurricane Michael’s injury

Bay County, Florida (WMBB) – In addition to homes and businesses, Hurricane Michael replaced more than 400 million cubic yards of Mexican beach coastline.

This year, city officials began a reset project to put the sand back on the beach. Weeks Marine Company contractors are now making final touches on the project.

“We’re doing the last minute, it’s the beach planting process, we’re growing dune vegetation and doing some areas with dunes and everything. We’ve been working on it for over eight years.

The crew worked at the 1500-foot section and moved west to the beach.

The three-month project adds 3 miles of 14-foot dunes from the EL Governor Long resort to the Mexican Beach Canal.

The contractor listed its equipment, extracting a million cubic yards of sand from the borrowed sand, which was of the same quality as the Mexican beach. They then grind it with digs and then take it to the beach to spread it.

“So it’s really high-quality sand, just putting all the sand there to help protect future houses and structures. Because there were 17-foot waves during Hurricane Michael, these dunes will help break these structures down into these structures,” said Commissioner Robert Carroll.

Within two weeks, the vegetation of the dunes will be completed. The project will be completed in time at the start of the turtle season in May.

The beach is currently open, but authorities remind people that walking on sand dunes is illegal and fined.
