The mayor of Miami Beach, Florida is supporting a proposal to terminate the lease and financial support of independent theaters. No other land, The Oscar-winning documentary tells the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis.
The move comes after several rights advocates and artists in recent days criticized Steven Meiner’s threat and said it would violate freedom of speech.
Meiner earlier said he tried to evict and stop payments to future grants to the nonprofit O cinema in South Beach.
The mayor plans to vote on a formal resolution on Wednesday that formally states the intentions that were introduced by Meiner and made public last week. Most city commissioners say they oppose the resolution, as do dozens of people gathered there.
Meiner said he will launch another resolution aimed at encouraging O Cinema to showcase the film, highlighting “a fair, balanced perspective of the current war” and postpone it to a future meeting.
No other land Opened earlier this month at O Cinema, located in Miami Beach’s historic Town Hall. Meiner reached out to O Cinema O Cinema CEO Vivian Marthell to show the film a few days before its premiere.
Martel said she initially agreed not to screen it, but later reflected on the broader impact on freedom of speech and O Cinema’s mission to share not only the film that entertains, challenges, educates and inspires meaningful dialogue.
If the eviction advances, she threatens legal action against the city.
No other landThis was filmed between 2019 and 2023 and released last year, directed by a group of Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers: Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor.
The film records the Israeli military destroys Palestinian villages on the West Bank. The attack on Israel led to the current war in Gaza just days before Hamas launched the deadly deadly October 7, 2023.
The film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary earlier this month as well as previous awards.
