According to a company blog post, the new 13-inch surface laptop measures 11.25 by 8.43 by 0.61 inches and 2.7 pounds, making it “the thinnest and lightest surface laptop to date.” It joins Mashable’s current favorite Windows laptop, Surface Laptop 7, which debuts in June 2024: 13.8-inch and 15-inch.

Compared to last year’s model, the new surface laptop has a reduced 60Hz touch screen display with lower resolution and contrast. It’s also a bit powerful, as the existing Surface Laptop 7 is configurable using a 10-core Snapdragon X Plus and a 12-core Snapdragon X Elite CPU, up to 64GB of RAM. It should still be picky, though: Microsoft’s announcement claims it “overtakes the Macbook Air M3”, Apple’s pre-lap notebook.

This 13-inch surface laptop may have a leg on the flagship model of the Endurance Division. The local video playback volume for 23 hours per charge is 23 hours, while the rated value of the Surface Laptop 7 is 20 hours. That is, the latter lasted nearly 23 hours in Mashable’s hands-on test, so it may be equal in practice.

The new Surface laptop costs $899.99, which is $300 less than the Basic Surface Laptop 7 ($100 less than the entry-level M4 MacBook Air).

According to Microsoft’s announcement, the 12-inch Surface Pro measures 10.8 by 7.47 by 0.3 inches and weighs just 1.5 pounds, making it the “thintest and lightest copy to date + PC” of all brands. The title was previously held by the Asus Zenbook A14 (maybe still should be: the 12-inch Surface Pro does not include the keyboard).

The new Surface Pro is a hybrid device with a built-in adjustable stand, which is the smaller alternative to last year’s 13-inch Surface Pro 11th Edition, which comes in two different configurations: the 10-core Snapdragon X Plus X Plus with an LCD touchscreen display, and the 12-core Snapdragon X Elite X Elite X Elite model with an OLED TouchScreen display while using Oled touchscreen cass and coss and 64 gbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb. Its own touch screen has a worse refresh rate, resolution and contrast ratio than both options, but has higher battery life for 16 hours of local video playback per charge (only the Wifi-Folly models are 14, and those with cellular connectivity have frequent models). Like the new surface laptops, we will see how it translates into real-world usage.

The new Surface Pro starts at $799.99, making it $400 cheaper than the Base Surface Pro 11.

No more “go”?

The launch of the 13-inch surface laptop and the 12-inch Surface Pro appears to be for Microsoft’s Surface Straptop Go of Budget Protable laptop series, which was last updated at the end of 2023, although the company has not confirmed that yet. When asked about the fate of Surface Laptop GO, Microsoft Rep issued the following statement to Mashable: “The Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch expands the Pro and laptop cable and acts as an entry point for our Surface Copilot+ PC series.”

If nothing else, these new versions are sure to indicate that the tech giant will promise to use windows on X86-based processors (at least for its consumer-facing products).

New Windows Copilot+ Experience

Microsoft launched several new and updated Copilot+ experiences with its new Surface device on Tuesday, including dynamic lighting features in Microsoft Photos, a custom sticker generator in paint, image descriptions for narrators—reading capabilities, and more clicks to perform actions. They will be rolling out to its Windows Insiders members over the course of next month.

Copilot+ PC users will also soon have the option to enable AI agents that can automate and perform tasks in their settings menu. Users will be able to describe the help they need in simple English, such as “My mouse pointer is too small” and the AI agent will take care of it.
