Sports columnist and author John Feinstein died at the age of 69

John Feinstein’s career was a columnist and bestselling author, making him one of the most famous sports writers of the time, and his brother passed away Thursday. He is 69 years old.

Feinstein is a regular sports columnist for the position, but his career began as a night police reporter in 1977. He is known for his coverage of college basketball, but has written about all sports, including golf, college football and the Olympics. He wrote letters for Golf Digest and regularly contributed to various radio programs, serving on National Public Radio.

The Post published a column by Michigan State coach Tom Izzo on Thursday morning.

According to his website, Feinstein wrote 48 books, 23 of which became the New York Times bestseller list. His first book, The Brink on The Brink, chronicled the 1985-86 Indiana University basketball season, making him a household name and stayed on the Times Bestseller list for 17 weeks. The book details Bob Knight’s coaching method, which later became an ESPN movie.

He also wrote “A Good Long Step” on the 1994-95 PGA Tour, a No. 1 bestseller and a highly acclaimed book about Army-Black Football Competition. He also wrote more than a dozen secret books for teenagers.

Feinstein won the Curt Gowdy Media Award in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013. He is also in the National Sports Writers and Sports Businessmen Hall of Fame.
