Nationals hire Paul toboni as president of baseball operations

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that National is reaching a deal with Red Sox assistant general manager Paul Toboni to become the new head of its baseball operations division. Britt Ghiroli of Track and Field reported that Topani will serve as president of Washington baseball business and will hire a general manager as his second conductor.
The Nath’s front desk is run by Mike Rizzo for many years. He first became general manager in 2009 and later won the title of president of baseball business. The club has had great success during their tenure as they were contenders for the past decade and won the 2019 World Series.
But since winning the title, they have entered a protracted reconstruction of their struggle to get out of it. The current campaign will be their sixth consecutive time and with a record of failure. Rizzo hired with manager in July Dave Martinezwhen club hopes shake. Assistant General Manager Mike Debartolo was appointed interim general manager at the time.
Toboni is only 35 years old and seems to be a rising star in baseball. Sox fired Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom in 2023, and Toboni became interested in the work, even though he was 33 at the time, when he was vice president of amateur scouts and player development for Boston.
Sox eventually hired Craig Breslow Change the flowering. Shortly thereafter, Toboni was promoted to Assistant General Manager and entered the 2024 campaign. According to reports, in recent weeks, Breslow plans to hire/promote the general manager to work under his leadership, and Topony is a strong candidate for the position.
But Toboni is also one of the many candidates to run the Washington front desk. Other candidates for coverage include another Boston assistant general manager Eddie Romero, as well as Cubs general manager Carter Hawkins, Guardian assistant general manager GM Matt Forman, Dodgers senior vice president Josh Byrnes, Royals assistant general manager Scott Sharp and D-Backs Agm Amiel Amiel Sawdaye. Instead of finishing second place in Boston, Toboni finished first in Washington.
As Passan notes, Toboni has been in the draft in Boston in recent years as the club stocks impressive young talent. These include players who have already moved to the Major League Baseball rankings Roman Anthony,,,,, Christian Campbell,,,,, Payton Tolle,,,,, Connolly morning and those included in Garrett Crochet trading. Boston sent Kyle Teel,,,,, Braden Montgomery,,,,, Chase Meidroth and Wikelman González Go to the white socks in that exchange.
This is probably the interest of the people, who have been working hard to develop their own draft picks and signers in recent years. There are some young talents in the current major league roster Juan Soto Go to the priest. The Nath can get CJ Abrams,,,,, James Wood,,,,, Mackenzie Gore,,,,, Robert Hassel III and Jarlin Susana In this agreement. Hassel hasn’t offered anything in the major leagues yet, but Abrams, Wood and Gore have all succeeded. Susana hasn’t reached Triple-A yet and has only had LAT surgery, but he is considered one of the most important pitching prospects in the league.
By contrast, many of the players drafted or signed by the Nath were not eliminated as expected. Over the past decade, they have used first-round draft picks Carter Kieboom,,,,, Dann Dunning,,,,, Seth Romero,,,,, Mason Denaburg,,,,, Jackson Rutledge,,,,, Cade Cavalli,,,,, Brady House,,,,, Elijah Green,,,,, Dylan Crew,,,,, King Siph and Eli Willits. Some of these players are still young and have Naths, but the club may not be good for that group overall.
Ideally, Toboni could help NAT achieve better results. Even if he can do this, it may not happen overnight. Recently, it has been reported that the franchise is dealing with some issues related to system issues. The club has recently set off with several famous staff. Danny Haas, the chief of the reconnaissance department at Andrew Golden of the Washington Post, jumped to the Oriole a few weeks ago. Just this week, Talknats reported that the senior director of amateur scout Brad Ciolek is about to join the Tigers.
Toboni’s top priority might focus on such behind-the-scenes details, and then he can even turn his attention to the lineup. Unless he wants to keep interim captain Miguel cairo for next year, he also has to search for the new manager to replace Martinez.
It will certainly be clearer in the coming weeks. It is not clear that Debartolo’s next step is a candidate for the work, but has been approved. This news may also change the next step for the Red Sox, probably hoping to keep Topony.
For the Naths, it is clear that 2025 is a hub for them. In the coming years, it will be impossible to assess the transition, but they hope it is a transition away from the dull present and a better future.
