Nigerian makeup artist goes to jail for throwing cash at wedding

A makeup artist in Nigeria was sentenced to six months in prison for abuse of currency for dancing during a wedding celebration last December.

Abdullahi Musa Huseini, known on social media as “amuscap” and was sentenced in the high court in the northern city of Kano after being sentenced.

Bombs or “spraying” known as banknotes in Nigeria are usually carried out at weddings and other celebrations to show a person’s wealth and express an expression of joy.

However, the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) has been launching a campaign against it, saying it shows that Naira is one of the most important symbols in the country.

Amuscap is the latest Nigerian to be imprisoned for violating the 2007 Nigerian Central Bank Act.

It points to “spray, dance or [marching] In Naira is a crime, punishing no less than six months or a fine of 50,000 ($32; £25) or both.

EFCC “tampered” with Naira 100,000 by spraying notes while dancing during wedding celebrations.

A trans woman and actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, known as Bobrisky, was sentenced to six months in jail last year for being convicted of the same offense in different cases.

Some social media users are angry at the sentencing of makeup artists, saying the punishment is too harsh.

Some have pointed out that allowing those suspected of stealing state wealth is not punished but has been sentenced to jail for “spraying their own money.”
