Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford imposes tariffs on the United States

Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, is adding a 25% surcharge to all electricity exports sent to the United States as part of a retaliation against the Trump administration’s tariffs on Canadian products.

The province said in a statement Monday that the 25% surcharge will continue to take effect as of March 10 and will affect consumers and businesses in Michigan, Minnesota and New York. It added that the new expenses will add $400,000 in daily fees to homes and businesses in the U.S.

“President Trump’s tariffs are a disaster for the U.S. economy. They make life for American families and businesses more expensive,” Prime Minister Doug Ford said in a statement. “Until the threat of tariffs disappears forever, Ontario will not back down. We will gain a foothold, use all the tools in the toolkit and do everything we can to protect Ontario.”
