Penn State proposes to close seven campuses

Penn State is weighing a plan to close seven of its 19 Commonwealth campuses, and its governing committee is expected to vote in a virtual meeting on Thursday.

The proposed closure of campuses are Dubois, Fayette, Monte Alto, New Kensington, Shenogo, Wilkes Barry and York. These campuses have registered less than 3,200 students in total. Penn State York, which had 703 students last fall, had the highest enrollment in seven.

If approved, the campus will be closed before the end of spring 2027.

Pennsylvania President Neeli Bendapudi announced the plan in an email Tuesday after several media outlets identified seven federal campuses targeting closures.

“I believe that the recommendations balance the needs of our need to adapt to Pennsylvania’s changing needs with compassion for these decisions, both within Pennsylvania and within the Commonwealth, with certain decisions, partly because of the two years that any campus will end. As we work next, we will put a step in any necessary transition, we will put some interest in any necessary transition, we will send pen part, we will put some interest in making a recommendation.

Penn State announced in February that it will consider closing some campuses due to lower enrollment rates. Officials reviewed 12 campuses for closures before settling in seven.

Although some trustees withdraw their proposals, they appear to be in a minority.
