Poland signs $1.7 billion infantry fighting vehicle deal
Warsaw, Poland – The Polish Ministry of Defense has signed an agreement worth approximately 6.57 billion (USD 1.7 billion) to acquire 111 Borsuk (Badger) tracking the country’s state-owned defense group PGZ.
“We are delivering on our commitment to invest in the Polish defense industry,” Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, deputy prime minister and minister of defense, quoted in a statement issued by his agency.
“Security and economy, these two things are in Poland.
Under the plan, Borsuk will replace the Soviet-designed BWP-1 vehicle as the IFV of the Polish military. The March 27 contract marks the first administrative transaction in the 2023 framework contract, with a total of 1,400 Borsuks and included vehicles.
According to the deal, 111 ordered vehicles will be provided to the Polish Army between 2025 and 2029.
Borsuk with amphibious technology is equipped with a ZSSW-30 remote-controlled turret. The vehicle is run by three crew members and it can carry six soldiers.
Local company Huta Stalowa Wola (currently a subsidiary of PGZ) started work on developing Borsuk in 2014, which will be part of the consortium that will produce vehicles for the Polish army.
