Read the world in your classroom

Hey, teacher’s friend! Do you like opening surprises in emails like me? I’m so happy to open the reading of the World Kit from Random House children’s books. Inside, I found a brochure, a passport for students, beautiful posters and stickers. You can also pick up the kit and supply the last one.

Reading on posters around the world makes children so excited

I hang the poster immediately after hanging up the Shanghai poster. The student was discussing the map and asked me what to do immediately. I’m glad to hear my fourth graders connect with the places we study in social studies.

Who reads in books around the world?

The kit is ideal for teachers from grades 2 to 5 and can be easily integrated with ELA and social studies. I was able to associate it with our social research goals that required us to collect information from a variety of primary and secondary sources, such as printed materials, graphic representations, artifacts and media.

How to use readings from around the world in class

We first filled in the passport included in the kit. I encourage students to take some time to really think about where they want to travel in the future. We also drew pictures of our passports, but you can take a quick photo to add this location. I explained to students that when they complete readings around the world, they receive stickers on their passports. As another idea, you can cut blue or black card stock in half and use it as a passport cover for the passport included in the kit.

My kids absolutely love to follow the map to discover new books. In a sense, it seems like we are hunting for treasure together. These books lead to some beautiful discussions about cultural differences. I brought a globe so that students could find the location on the map.

It’s also fun to try some bonus activities that are quoted on the website Spice box and My first day.

See how we use some of our favorite readings in books and events around the world

My first day It is one of our favorite books to read. The illustrations are breathtaking and the kids are really interested in finding out how little boys go to school. We talked about all the different ways kids go to school, and the real adventures for some! After reading My first dayWe spent some time discussing the questions raised in the bonus event and practicing practices to activate their imagination. As a teacher, I love the quietness of students focusing on breathing and visualization. It brings peace to the room and helps them focus on what we are about to complete.

introduce Spice boxI brought all kinds of spices from the cabinets at home. Kids love to smell them and talk about recipes they may be used. I ask students to close their eyes so that they can really focus on the scent. This story is well explained and helps the kids understand what is in the spice box. In this book, we learn that Rishi’s box is filled with not only spices, but also memories. The kids gasped as Rishi lowered the box, and they were clearly relieved when he was able to fix it. After reading this book, we discussed the issues provided in the bonus event.

Why do I read around the world again in class

Every time we “explored” a country by reading one of the books, we add stickers to our passports. I also used my interactive board to take pictures of each location online. This helps students understand and appreciate culture, the appearance of the land, and more. Obviously, the books included on the map are carefully selected and I am happy to introduce books from all over the world. I like them very much, too!

It is very easy to incorporate these materials into our social research and ELA teaching blocks. The material is organized, engaging and thought-provoking for students. I encourage teachers everywhere to sign up to receive your special kit!
